This month’s Moonshine Ink is a visual feast… starting with its cover, my favorite yet. Besides reading my DiStill Life column on the amazing Susie Alexander, who bested a van Gogh legacy in February (see page 60), here are my picks for the month (click the links to read if you’re not in town to pick up a copy):

-Practical Wellness columnist Linda Lindsay’s exposé on radon: its startling Tahoe statistics, and how to test and protect your home, page 20

-the fun design and great reader-submitted images in the Winter Photo Annual, page 27

-the tater tot photo on page 44

-Robert “Fro” Frohlich’s Glacier Point adventure, page 46. He’s one of my favorite local writers — always good for a laugh!

-Olivia Dwyer’s profile on local Etsy artisans, page 58, well written and so nice to see folks doing what they love for a living

-and of course, Seth Lightcap’s tribute to C.R. Johnson, page 49, who died at Squaw Valley on February 24

It’s Moonshine time! I love it when my column gets inked every month… just seeing on the page is exciting, but especially when it’s chosen to be in color. My interview with photographer Ryan Salm got two full-color pages (pg 54–55), so be sure to check it out. You can see even more of his work on his new gallery website.

Late 2009 brought a few assignments from Western Art & Architecture and I’m happy to say the issue is finally in my hands… nothing better than seeing your work laid out on glossy pages.

In their Winter/Spring issue, I go behind the scenes with sculptor and world-renowned taxidermist Michael Boyce of Animal Artistry to visit his home studio and discuss his latest venture into the art world: oil painting. I also interviewed big-time wildlife and sporting art collectors Alan and Nancy Maiss on what inspires them to collect. Read the stories here:

tahoe quarterly winter issue

The latest Tahoe Quarterly is all glossed up and getting out on the streets.

In this issue, I cover the latest local avalanche technology (Squaw follows Mt. Rose in bringing in an avalauncher) and South Shore oil painter Kit Night, who was a delight to meet and such a talented and beautiful person. Check out these behind-the-scenes shots I took while visiting her studio—I especially love the white brick fireplace and random yet organized trinkets and wall art with which she surrounds herself.

Very excited for this month’s Moonshine Ink (on stands today) as I profile oil painter Brooke Bishop in my DiStill Life column. As you can see, her work is extraordinary… layers, textures, color, the whole shebang. Check out her work in person on the 18th, when Spirit Gallery in Truckee hosts an opening reception for her “Path to Heart” exhibition, 4–8pm. (*the exhibit runs through January 3)

Also, this month’s edition marks a new milestone for me and Moonshine as I’ve taken on a new role to edit the Wellness & Learning section. Check it out and let me know what you think!

lake tahoe traveler, winter edition

Snow has fallen, the ski resorts are open (some of them at least) and the winter crowds are due to arrive any day… my latest handiwork in print form, the Lake Tahoe Traveler visitors’ guide, has hit the streets just in time for it all. Pick up one for free around the lake!

My stories include: Lunch on the Run, detailing the best food and where to get it at local ski resorts; Kidding Around, options for family fun; and a run-down on the season’s latest and greatest outdoor gear.

Another month, another Moonshine. Yep, it’s time to check out my latest DiStill Life column in Moonshine Ink. While I try to put a personal touch on everything I write—by attending the art opening, taking the art class or simply covering an artist whose work I am really in to—this month’s musing on the North Tahoe arts scene takes the personal cake, you could say.

Hanni, one of my best friends and “partner in craft” (as I dub her in my story), recently moved back to Alaska. Bearing witness to her many talents over the past year inspired me to be more crafty, and I reflect upon our partnership and many other duos creating great things in our community. Read my column on page 69, or view it online (I’ll post the link as soon as it’s up).

If you  haven’t picked up the latest Moonshine Ink, it would behoove you to do so RIGHT NOW!

It’s a great issue packed with goodies like the feature interview with adventurer Doug Stoup, info on local ski swaps and my DiStill Life column on the talented artist Douglas E. Taylor, owner of Vista Gallery (page 61).

Due to space constraints, this photo I took of the artist and his dog, Denver, didn’t make the print version, but I just have to show it here because Denver is one of the cutest gallery dogs around…
