SPIRIT (fire) by Douglas E. Taylor

SPIRIT (fire) by Douglas E. Taylor

If you  haven’t picked up the latest Moonshine Ink, it would behoove you to do so RIGHT NOW!

It’s a great issue packed with goodies like the feature interview with adventurer Doug Stoup, info on local ski swaps and my DiStill Life column on the talented artist Douglas E. Taylor, owner of Vista Gallery (page 61).

Due to space constraints, this photo I took of the artist and his dog, Denver, didn’t make the print version, but I just have to show it here because Denver is one of the cutest gallery dogs around…

the scene of the crime

I think my new house is trying to kill me.

It all began on Sunday morning when out of nowhere, as I went to grab a towel from a bucket on my bathroom floor, the slanted ceiling jumped out at my head. Five days later and I’m still feeling the post-concussive syndrome. Don’t worry, I finally went to the doctor and he saw nothing too amiss, but I cannot exercise (no walks even!) until the symptoms reside.

So pardon my silence on the blogosphere, but my home got me good.

I’m super pumped to announce that I’ve finished proofreading a book for UNR’s Center for Basque Studies—the first such task in my editing career to date.

The book, Alejandro Aldekoa (1920–96): Master of Pipe and Tabor Dance Music in the Basque Country, written by a Basque ethnomusicologist, covers the life and music of Alejandro Aldekoa, from Berriz. Reading it certainly brought me back to my days of traveling in the Basque Country. Did you know that I’ve been to Pamplona during the running of the bulls?

Stay tuned for the book’s release!

Woo hoo! It’s time for another Brickelltown Crafternoon already! You know I’m a sucker for the crafty ways of the Brickelltown shop owners, so I’ll be there for sure. Plus, I can’t break my streak now; I’ve made it to all the Crafternoons thus far.

Here’s the skinny if you’d like to join me:

Custom Collage Pillow Class, Tuesday October 20, 4:30–7pm

You’ll learn to cut, collage and sew a one-of-a-kind pillow slip, creating “your very own masterpiece of comfort.”

Oh the joys of my work as an editor… this week, I’ve been on the phone with Tahoe athletes vying for a spot in the coming 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. And while I’ve been trying to figure out how to list all their accomplishments in a consistent manner, and checking the writer’s stats on all things Vancouver, I got a little sidetracked today with what I deem to be the best entourage of mascots to come during an Olympics of my lifetime.

Yes, I said it. I know I’m an Atlanta native, but what the hay was up with Izzy? And Torino’s Neve and Gliz, female and male snowball and ice cube, were equally disturbing. But I am totally enamored with Vancouver’s batch, especially Quatchi, a sasquatch hailing from the “mysterious forests of Canada” who dreams of becoming a hockey goalie.

I mean, does it get any better than this?

and quatchi sticks the landing!

Yes, it does!

they love long walks on the beach too!

and triple-seated biking

Learn more about the mascots here; they have their very on interactive webpage, of course.

I’m reveling, big time, in the jewelry I made this past Tuesday at Brickelltown Crafternoons‘ recycled jewelry making class with Lorien Powers of Drake & Lulu’s Art Shed. I not only got to repurpose my chunky apricot chain necklace into a pair of rocking earrings, I scored a pair of wooden whales for which I crafted loops and found a new home for the mini harmonica Chris gave me. Woo hoo! Plus, my partners in craft, Hanni and Chelsea, made use of feathers, leather and antique silver plates.
