Inflatable clown

Another month, another party… that’s how the folks at Truckee’s Brickelltown see it. July’s First Friday gathering features “art inspired by the carnival of life,” with more than 15 artists represented.

I don’t know about you, but for me, the word “carnival” conjures up some interesting imagery: part Mardi Gras, part clown frenzy, part brass band, the list goes on. While I let you whip up your own concoction of what exactly July 3 at Brickelltown will be like, enjoy the slightly disturbing, patriotic inflatable clown pictured above. And don’t forget to be there, from 4 to 8pm this Friday.

popsicles… perhaps the best thing invented for summertime snacking.

I am super excited because a popsicle mold is en route to my address! I am now accepting recipes (via comment) to attempt in my new gadget… come on people, get creative! I will share my batches with each and every one of you (disclaimer: you must live within non-melting distance from my house, or be available to come and get one yourself).

dinosaur art by Truckee local Sam Zabell

Check out my latest arts column for Moonshine Ink on stands now through July 15—got a cover line even!

I profile two local child artists, then detail how to get your own kid involved in visual arts. Was super fun to research, and inspiring to see young ones living creatively. Read it! page 70

Let’s take a look back at the past 36 hours:

Woke up @ 4:45 am EST, drive to airport, kiss mom goodbye, wait for the plane, 23rd on list to get a seat, don’t make the cut.

Wait another hour, nab last seat on flight. Rush over to Reno gate to again be denied. Four hour wait until next plane… read, eat yogurt, drink water, type, edit, type. Too bad I don’t know anyone in Salt Lake City. Afraid of airport’s airport (can everyone online right now access my documents?). Log off. Browse magazines, read Chabon’s Kavalier & Clay—am now obsessed!

Finally, my 3:10 departure begins boarding. Things seem bleak as the attendant is saying they are looking for someone to give up a seat because they oversold the flight. Minutes pass, then miraculously my name is called. I’m handed a golden ticket, to which I hold on tight, navigating the jump flight hallway while texting friends and family that I’ve finally made it. Hooray for me. Get on the plane, putting my bag in the overhead bin, when I hear my name again. Uh oh. Yep, the cruel humans yank me from the flight to wait more hours upon end for more oversold situations. Oh the emotional roller coaster of standby. (note I use no exclamation mark because I am now emotionally blank after the ordeal)

Needless to say, I left my Delta standby dreams at that awful E72 gate, then caught the next Southwest flight outta there (which was delayed 45 minutes). Some twelve hours later, I am still trying to get ahold of a Reno Delta agent to obtain my checked luggage. sigh.

Edges are beautiful metaphors—for hope, anticipation, limits/boundaries (and crossing them). Thus, the noun is a fitting title for Tahoe Writers Works’ literary journal that no doubt leaps off an edge or two…

The South Tahoe–based writers’ club is releasing its third volume tomorrow Wednesday June 17. From 7-9 pm at the Blue Angel Cafe, join local poets, writers and artists for a release party to include readings and book signings.

Submissions for volume IV are accepted through October 1. See the Tahoe Writers Works website for more information.

Mushroom faces

North Tahoe Arts’ month-long celebration of slow food and the return of local farmers markets is in full swing. In addition to food/farm-inspired artwork on display, the Tahoe City gallery hosts speakers like Dan Macon of Flying Mule Farm (tomorrow, June 11), Gary Romano of Sierra Valley Farms and Mark Estee of Moody’s. I am particularly excited about the AGROart event on Thursday June 25, where artists will construct sculptures using produce from 10am to 2pm. Reminds me of an old-favorite book: How are you Peeling? Foods with Moods by Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers. For the full schedule of events, check out the North Tahoe Arts website.

brrrr.

46-degree high in Tahoe today… not your typical June day, but it sure made for some fun photography at the lake. Went out to the T-dock in Tahoe City to take some parting shots with my Polaroid camera for a friend moving back East. Gloomy but beautiful, eh? I’m checking out for the weekend… off to play ultimate in (hopefully sunny) Santa Cruz. adios!

summer has arrived

For those of you unfamiliar with my day-to-day, I have spent the majority of the past 4 years toiling away for Tahoe’s lovely lifestyle publication, Tahoe Quarterly. The latest Summer issue just came in, so look for it soon in your mailboxes and in stores around The Lake.

My work on this issue (in addition to editing, fact checking and selecting photos) includes an artist profile on Carole Sesko, a must-have list for beaching-it in Tahoe, profiles on adventurer Dave Nettle and social worker Alissa Nourse, and a short bit on singer/songwriter Darin Talbot. Plus, look for my photo of Chris’s extensive outdoor gear collection on page 54.
