Domesticity + Craft

Well, not here in Tahoe at the moment, but in my Etsy shop: I just posted a listing for my snowflake card set. The stamp was one of my first creations, and I used it for Christmas gift wrap decorating. Now, it can be yours in a few short clicks!

Also, stay tuned for the January 12 unveiling of a super exciting design I completed last night!

Oh joy! Things went great at my craft fair debut!

Though I was expecting the worst due to the raging snowstorm that blew in yesterday, there were plenty of folks who braved the snow to support local vendors. I had a variety of customers, but the couple who bought a 20-pack of my cactuses for their holiday cards made my night. Thanks to all who came out, and especially to Beth and Lengua Viva for being such great hosts. Stay tuned for my Etsy shop (where I’ll sell my block printed creations year-round) coming soon!

My craft fair debut is approaching, and I’ve come a long way with my block-printed creations… can’t wait to reveal them in full on Saturday (hint: they’ll have some holiday fixins)! Just to remind you, here are the details:

Holiday Arts and Fine Crafts Gathering at Lengua Viva (10070 Frates Lane, behind Ace Hardware, in Truckee), this Saturday December 12 from 4–8pm.

Sharing my booth will be: DumpTruck hats by two amazing North Tahoe locals, felted slippers by the fabulous Zan Larkins of the West Shore and letterpress cards from Fancy Ink.

Yep, I’m pretty obsessed with Etsy (note button to your right), and always dream of one day making the time to attend an Etsy Lab craft session. This week’s lab is so close to home I just have to share it with you: San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Folk Art is hosting a quick and easy hat knitting project (pictured above) this Thursday December 3 from 6–8pm. It’s free, open to all skill levels and materials are provided!

All that and more! Felting demo with SF artist Jackie Huang, fiber store A Verb for Keeping Warm shares techniques for spinning yarn and locally brewed Trumer Pils to quench the thirst!

For those afar, a live demo project will be broadcasted via webcam in Etsy’s Virtual Labs at 1pm. To knit along, download the free pattern.

Lengua Viva in Truckee is hosting a Holiday Arts and Crafts Gathering December 12 with goods by “undiscovered Tahoe artisans,” and guess who’s gonna be there? Yep, I’m totally undiscovered, and have committed to a booth. I’m currently hunting for others to flesh out my puny wares, so if you live in Tahoe, have a craft and are mysterious about it, then let me know. The more the merrier!

Shop the fair and enjoy live music and tasty treats there, from 4–8pm on December 12. 10070 Frates Lane (behind Ace Hardware)

owlette at 1 hour old

We should have seen it coming. Tahoe—especially its West Shore—is known to see some bears. Chris’s uncarved pumpkin received a flesh wound from a bear about a week ago, and our friends down the road were recently victims of a break-in, losing some $400 worth of food to an ursine belly. But, it was Halloween after all, and we displayed our freshly carved pumpkins proud last night.

Yet, upon waking, a ghastly scene greeted us on our patio. My pumpkin’s hat left on the front porch, a trail of guts leading to the body, FACELESS. Yes, some sicko bear decided to rip off the face of Owlette (so she was dubbed for her small stature) and leave her hallowed body lying prone to the sky.

And what’s even stranger is that the bear decided to leave Chris’s pumpkin unscathed, except for the earlier wound it likely inflicted (you can see the marks on the pumpkin’s back in the photo below).

At least Owlette lived a glorious, though short, life. Last night, she dutifully greeted our trick-or-treaters and a few passersby earlier in the evening. And her seeds, which we toasted, topped our salads last night. R.I.P.

you were a good pumpkin
